The Dolly Parton My People Senior Activity Center hosts monthly activities funded by the Sarah Timmons Activities Program
The Sarah Timmons Activities Program (Sarah’s Fund) was established to give Sevier County Seniors something fun to look forward to each and every month. And with the help of the professional activities teams at the Dolly Parton My People Senior Activity Center, local seniors have been enjoying a monthly “Sarah’s Fund” day filled with activities, food and entertainment.
Karen Estep, Business Manager for the Senior Center, recently shared on the program’s success.
“I would like to [say] how absolutely wonderful this fund has been for the community,” Karen said. “You are certainly making an impact on these seniors’ lives.”
On the fourth Thursday of each month, a bus from the Senior Center goes around to local nursing homes, assisted livings and senior housing complexes and picks up any of the residents that want to participate. This usually ends up being anywhere between 25 – 50 seniors shuttled to the Senior Center for a fun-filled day of activities. Karen went on to share what seniors have to look forward to during a typical “Sarah’s Fund” day.
“We bring them to the Senior Center on our bus,” Karen explains. “We teach them a craft (sometimes two) that they complete while here and get to take home with them. Then, they are given free lunch. After lunch, we have live entertainment followed by an Ice Cream Social.”
In lieu of the regular “Sarah’s Fund” day in December, the staff hopes to include this group in the Senior Center’s annual Christmas Party. Joining the other Seniors at the Senior Center, they will enjoy an excellent catered meal with live entertainment, followed by a special visit from Santa, who brings a gift for each and every person. While it may be a bit more expensive, this gives them something extra-special to look forward to during the holidays!
The staff of the Senior Center sends a heartfelt “Thank You!” on behalf of the seniors you touch each month. With your generous contributions to Sarah’s Fund, together we are able to keep our community’s seniors happy, healthy and active!
Sarah’s Fund was developed in partnership with S.D. Professionals’ President, Jacob Timmons, and the Sevier County Council on Aging staff at the Dolly Parton My People Senior Activity Center. Together they work to identify seniors isolated at home as well as lacking the ability to attend activities outside of their home or healthcare facility.
